The hospice nurse called a few days ago to say that my mother-in-law had entered the last phase of her illness. Early-onset-Alzheimer’s had taken away big chunks of her, often abruptly. Though she’d gone from being fairly independent four years ago, to completely immobile and unable to communicate today, the illness had also felt brutally slow…
